Experiment 4.1

What Is Happening to Your Weight?

Materials:

scale to measure your weight

To see if your weight is changing, you can weigh yourself and record your weight in your science notebook each day for at least a month. To be consistent, weigh yourself at the same time each day. To see why, record your weight before and after eating a large meal. What happened to your weight after eating? Design and carry out an experiment to find out whether your weight changes while you sleep. If it does, can you explain why?

After a month of daily weighings, has your weight changed? If you gained weight, it may be because you are growing. If you think you are growing, have a parent carefully measure your height. Record the result and then make another measurement after another month of daily weighings. Are you growing taller as well as heavier?

What happens to your weight during spirited exercise? To find out, weigh yourself before and immediately after you have engaged in a vigorous workout for an hour or more. What happened to your weight during exercise? Can you explain why?

In the next activity you will discover objective ways to determine whether a person is underweight, overweight, or even obese.
